MOTIVATION FOR BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY
The primary purpose of breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) is to alleviate the problematic medical and aesthetic symptoms of macromastia, the medical condition of having enlarged breasts. The weight of heavy breasts can cause disturbances in numerous body systems, and can potentially lead to weight gain by detrimentally impacting a woman’s ability to exercise and live an active life.
Some of the most common physical symptoms of macromastia include:
- Sensation loss, tingling, or numbness in the hands, arms or breasts
- Chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain
- Deeply pigmented grooves in the shoulder area as a result of pressure from bra straps
- Improper posture
- Chest wall pain
- Recurrent rashes underneath and between the breasts
- Shortness of breath
- Polycystic mastitis (cystic breast infections)
- Stretched skin and/or sagging, low-hanging breasts
Enlarged breasts can also have troubling consequences for one’s emotional well-being and lifestyle choices, potentially leading to increased self-consciousness and heightened anxiety levels. The weight of heavy breasts can make participation in sports and other physical activities extremely difficult, and finding appropriate clothing and bras can become a very frustrating process. Reduction mammaplasty can bring the breasts into a more balanced and proportionate relation to the rest of the body, and can alleviate much of the physical discomfort caused by enlarged breasts, through the surgical excision of excess breast skin, fat, and glandular tissue.
Dr. J. Timothy Katzen, M.D. is a highly experienced, board certified plastic surgeon who has helped many of his patients improve their physical and emotional well-being with breast reduction surgery at his private practice in Beverly Hills, California. Dr. Katzen understands the importance of continuous education in the constantly evolving field of plastic surgery, and takes pride in keeping up to date with the latest developments in breast surgery technology in order to provide his patients with beautifully natural results and the shortest possible recovery periods following their breast reduction surgeries.
REDUCTION MAMMAPLASTY PROCEDURE
Breast reduction surgery involves the removal of surplus fat, breast tissue, and skin through a series of incisions made in one of three distinct patterns:
- Circular incision pattern around the areola
- Anchor-shaped incision pattern
- Racquet or Key-hole shaped incision pattern, encircling the areola before extending downward to the breast crease
Reduction mammaplasty generally takes 2-5 hours, and is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. During your initial consultation, Dr. Katzen will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your breast composition, breast reduction goals, and medical history, before selecting the appropriate incision option for your reduction mammaplasty.
After making the incision, Dr. Katzen will adjust the position and size (if necessary) of your nipple, and will lift and reshape your breasts, decreasing the amount of original breast tissue, and reducing the size and volume of your breasts. If fatty tissue is a key factor in the enlargement of your breasts, liposuction may be performed in conjunction with your breast reduction surgery. Similarly, if you are experiencing ptosis of the breasts (breast sagging), a breast lift can also be performed during your breast reduction, in order to ensure that your newly contoured breasts have a lifted, youthful appearance.
BREAST REDUCTION RECOVERY AND RESULTS
Following your breast reduction surgery, a drain will be placed under each arm to remove excess blood or fluid, and your breasts will be covered with bandages or a gauze dressing. Temporary post-surgical swelling and bruising is to be expected, and pain medication will be provided to ameliorate any discomfort or breast sensitivity. Patients generally take one week off from work, and are advised to refrain from all physical activity for at least one month following surgery, in order to give their body sufficient time to heal. A surgical bra will be provided and should be worn for up to four weeks after surgery, and any incision scarring will fade over time until it is barely discernible.
Dr. Katzen’s practice is built on the foundational principle of surgical customization, meaning that as a patient, you will receive a unique treatment plan, tailored to reflect your specific aesthetic preferences, and designed to bring your surgical goals to fruition. Dr. Katzen and his professional staff have created a warm, welcoming office environment, where you will feel secure and comfortable throughout your breast reduction experience.
